Solar Sprint
Junior Solar Sprint is a program for 7th and 8th grade students that involves building a model solar car and entering it in competition with students from other schools. There are trophies for several aspects of technical design, design aesthetics and speed. It can be done entirely as an extracurricular activity with students working in groups of 2 to 4 and it involves after-school work for about three hours a week over a six week period.
"The Junior Solar Sprint offers students an opportunity to learn by means of a friendly competition against their peers where students take responsibility for the design, construction and performance of a model solar electric vehicle. The role of the adult is to nurture the spirit of excitement and the joy of discovery and learning that awaits students. Adults let students assume the responsibility for design decisions, construction and maintenance of their vehicle, performance at a race and winning or losing."
This gets underway in March and the competition takes place in May. Check out the local webpage at http://www.geocities.com/jssbuffalo/
